Training a Service Dog isn’t easy
If you have not begun or completed formal Service Dog training, please exit now return when you are ready.
Under the law, training may be completed by yourself, a friend, family member or professional trainer or training organization. It takes about six months to a year (120+ hours) to properly train a Service or Assistance Dog. A full-time professional trainer may be able to train a dog more quickly. Be prepared to spend at least 30 hours of training in a controlled public setting so that the dog will learn to behave obediently and unobtrusively in public. Please remember that you are 100% responsible at all times for the behavior and control of your Service or Assistance Dog, even during training.
Note that not all states grant rights under the ADA to those Service or Assistance Dogs which are undergoing training. Owners are solely and personally responsible for being aware of the laws applicable to them and their Service or Assistance Animals, whether they are in training or have completed the training process, and for compliance with those laws. Owners should seek legal assistance, at their own expense, where they believe it is required to understand their obligations.
Our mantra is document, document, document. While not required by law, you may find it valuable to write down the details of your dog’s accomplishments and keep an accurate record of training.
I'm not ready yet.
I understand and choose to continue.
